From sketch to watercolor

I figured out a way to do something during my daughter's nap time without my preschooler constantly bugging me to stop doing what I'm doing! He will let me sit on the couch with him with my sketch pad and draw. I am not allowed to sit at my desk and paint as he is very insistent I spend his rest time sitting on the couch with him watching his shows. So, yesterday I took my sketch pad over to the couch and I sketched up several ideas for paintings to work on. This was great as I actually got 4 different sketches finished (several bad ideas too lol) and when the kids were finally in bed I was able to paint 3 different paintings in the two hours after bed time!

The first one I worked on was this Asiatic lilies painting I sketched up.

I used a photo for reference of the colors of the lilies. This variety is called "Heart Strings" with a lemon yellow fading into a dark pink colored petal.

Supplies used for this piece:

Arches rough watercolor paper size 9x12

Mijello Mission Gold Watercolor - Rose Madder, Lemon Yellow, Red Brown, Cobalt Blue and Hookers Green

Princeton Velvetouch round brushes sizes: 1, 4 & 8

I also worked on a painting of a monarch butterfly on a cone flower and a fairy sitting in a Dahlia. I worked on the face of this fairy forever it seemed - drawing faces is not in my wheelhouse and was very challenging. I like the end result - the hair was tricky and I couldn't figure out what color to go with - hindsight I should have gone more fantasy and gave her blue or purple hair - but there's always another painting!

Butterfly & Fairy painting supplies:

Bee Paper

Mijello Mission Gold Watercolor - Ivory Black, Permanent Yellow Light, Vermillion, Rose Madder, Hookers Green, Cobalt Blue, Raw Umber, Van Dyke Brown

Dr. Ph. Martin's Bleed Proof White

Princeton Velevtouch Brushes rounds - 1, 4, 6, 8, 10 and Select Artiste Angle Spotter Detailer
